If you haven’t yet decided when to visit Eforie Nord this year, start from what you are looking for: warm water, quiet or lower prices.
The question “when are we going to the seaside?” has a reflex answer in Romania: in July or in August. It is a good answer, but not the only one. Eforie Nord looks and feels different from one month to the next: in June it is green and quiet, in July and August full and noisy, in September golden and almost empty, and in winter it becomes a resort for walks and salty air. This guide goes through the whole year, month by month, so that you can choose the period that suits you, not the one when everybody else goes.

When to visit: the short answer
- For warm water and a holiday atmosphere: 10 July – 20 August.
- For quiet and gentle sunshine: 1–20 June and 1–15 September.
- For families with small children: the end of June and the last week of August.
- For the open-air mud cure: July and August, when the sun is strong enough for the cold baths.
- For walks, photography and birdwatching: May, October and winter.
What the climate is like in Eforie Nord
The Romanian seaside has hot, dry summers and mild but windy winters. The Black Sea warms up slowly in spring and cools down slowly in autumn, so the swimming season is shifted relative to the sunshine season: in May the air can be warm but the water is still cold, while in September the air turns cooler and the water stays pleasant.
Sea breezes make the heat easier to bear than inland. During the day the wind usually blows from the sea; in the evening it turns and blows from the land. On the seafront, a light sweater is useful even in August.
A phenomenon that few people know about explains why the sea is sometimes cold in the middle of summer: after a few days of strong wind blowing from the land, the warm surface water is pushed out to sea, and cold water rises from the depths towards the shore. The water temperature can drop by several degrees overnight and returns to normal within a few days.
Month by month
May: the resort wakes up
The seafront turns green, the terraces put out their tables, and the hotels open one after another. The days are long and often sunny, but the water is cold. It is a month for walks, for cycling and for those who want the sea without the crowds. The 1 May mini-break and Whitsun (Rusalii) are the exceptions: then the coast fills up for a few days.
June: the most underrated month
The first half of June is quiet, with gentle sunshine, very long days and prices that are usually lower than in high season. The water warms up from one week to the next; at the start it is cool, towards the end of the month it becomes good for swimming. Once school ends, the resort starts to fill up. June is the favourite month of those who burn easily and of those who want to read on the beach in peace.
July: full season
The sea is warm, all the terraces and entertainment venues are open, and in the evening the centre is full. It is the month with the most reliable beach days. The downside: a crowded beach after 11:00, traffic on the Sun Motorway (Autostrada Soarelui) at weekends and parking spaces that are hard to find. The solutions are simple: the beach early in the morning and late in the afternoon, arriving midweek, and accommodation with parking.
August: the height of summer
The first half of the month, around 15 August, the Feast of St Mary and Navy Day, is the busiest period of the year along the whole coast. The water is at its warmest. After 20 August people start to leave, the evenings cool down a little, and the resort regains its calm. The last week of August is one of the best of the year: warm sea, an airy beach.
September: the summer that has not ended
The first half of the month is the secret of those who know the coast. The water keeps the warmth stored up all summer, the sun no longer burns, the light is golden, and there is room on the beach as far as the eye can see. The days are shorter, and the evenings call for a sweater. Towards the end of the month the terraces close one by one, and the weather becomes changeable.
October – April: the winter sea
Outside the season, Eforie Nord is a small, quiet town. Many hotels and terraces are closed, but the seafront, the sea and the lake remain. It is the time for long walks, for watching storms from above, from the cliff, and for the birds on Lake Techirghiol, where large flocks of wild geese and ducks stop over in late autumn and winter. Spa treatments in the sanatoriums continue all year round.

When to come, depending on what you are looking for
If you are coming with small children
Choose the end of June or the last part of August: the water is warm, the sun gentler, the beach less crowded. If you can, avoid the week around 15 August. More tips in the guide Eforie Nord with children.
If you are coming as a couple
The beginning of June and the first half of September are the most romantic periods: the seafront is almost empty, the sunsets over the lake are long, and you can always find a table at the terraces.
If you are coming for the mud
The cold baths on the shore of Lake Techirghiol need strong sunshine, so July and August are the classic months. For treatment in a sanatorium, under medical supervision, you can come in any month. Details in the Lake Techirghiol guide.
If you cannot stand crowds
Come from Sunday to Friday, in June or in September. You will have a clear road in both directions and the beach almost to yourself.
If you also want to see Dobruja
May, June and September are the right months for Histria, Adamclisi and the Dobruja Gorges (Cheile Dobrogei), where shade is scarce and in July and August the midday heat is hard to endure. Ideas for routes in the article tourist attractions near Eforie Nord.
If you like photography
The most beautiful light is at sunrise, in any month, and on September afternoons. The white buildings on the seafront, led by the ship on the seafront, look their best in the first hour after sunrise.
Weekend or midweek?
The difference is bigger than it seems. In July and August, from Friday evening until Sunday afternoon, the coast receives the wave of those who come for just two days. The beaches are fullest on Saturday, and the Sun Motorway is busiest on Friday afternoon, towards the sea, and on Sunday afternoon, towards Bucharest.
If you can choose your days, a stay from Sunday evening to Friday morning has only advantages: a clear road, an airy beach, free tables at the terraces. How to avoid the queues, in detail, in the guide how to get to Eforie Nord.
What a good day looks like in each period
In June and September
You can stay on the beach at lunchtime too, because the sun is gentler, although sun cream is still necessary. In the evening, take a sweater and stroll along the seafront to the centre. Dinner is earlier, because it gets dark sooner in September.
In July and August
The day is split in two: beach between 8:00 and 11:00, a break in the shade between 12:00 and 16:00, a second swim after 16:30. In the evening people go out late, when it cools down. It is the rhythm followed by the locals and the only one that protects you from sunburn.
In winter
Dress warmly, because of the wind, and walk the seafront from one end to the other. The winter sea, with high waves breaking against the breakwaters, is a spectacle that summer tourists do not suspect.
What to pack, by month
- May and October: windproof jacket, jumper, closed shoes, sunglasses.
- June and September: swimsuit, but also long-sleeved tops and long trousers for the evening.
- July and August: light clothes, hat, high-factor sun cream, water shoes, a light sweater for the seafront.
- In any month: a small umbrella or a raincoat. Summer showers are short, but they arrive quickly.
Rain, wind and a backup plan
In summer, the rain is usually short and followed by sunshine. A whole day of rain is rare, and when it comes, Constanța is a quarter of an hour away: the Dolphinarium, the Planetarium, the Aquarium and the museums in the old centre easily fill a day. After a storm, the sea stays murky and rough for a day or two, and the red flag may stay up even if the sky has cleared. Obey it: the currents after a storm are the most dangerous.
When to book
For July and August, especially for weekends and for the week around 15 August, the good rooms are taken months ahead. If you want a particular room, for example one with a balcony facing the sea, book from spring. For June and September you will find a place with less notice, but there is more choice if you do not wait until the last minute.
Hotel Belona stands on the seafront, two to three minutes from the beach, with breakfast included and free parking, subject to availability. For available dates and rates, call +40 21 555 25 70 or write to belona@avenuehotels.ro. What to look for in accommodation in general, I explained in the guide how to choose accommodation in Eforie Nord.

The seaside of the past had the same calendar
The season has not changed much in almost a century. Hotel Belona was inaugurated in August 1933, in the middle of summer, and the advertisements in the newspapers of the 1930s announced the opening of the hotels in Eforia at the start of the warm season. Almost all the surviving postcards bear stamps from July and August: 5 August 1955, 18 August 1957. People came to the seaside in the same weeks in which we come now. The images are on the page The history of the place.
Holidays and events to bear in mind
A few dates completely change the face of the resort, for better or worse, depending on whether you want liveliness or quiet.
- 1 May. The unofficial opening of the season. The coast fills up for a few days, especially Mamaia and Vama Veche. Eforie Nord is quieter, but not empty. The water is cold.
- Whitsun (Rusalii). The mini-break at the end of spring or the beginning of summer brings a second wave of tourists. The date changes every year.
- 15 August. The Feast of St Mary and Romanian Navy Day. In Constanța there are naval parades and shows, and along the whole coast it is the peak of crowding for the year.
- The start of school. Once classes begin, in September, families with children leave, and the resort belongs to those with no schedule.
What changes in the resort outside the season
Anyone coming in June or in September should know what to expect, so as not to be disappointed.
- The terraces. Not all of them are open. The good ones usually are, but there is less choice.
- The beach. Sunloungers and beach bars are set up gradually in June and taken down gradually in September. Lifeguards work seasonal hours; outside them, you swim at your own risk and with great caution.
- Entertainment. The amusement park and the stalls operate fully only in July and August.
- Transport. Direct trains are less frequent outside the summer.
- The cold baths. They depend on the weather; on cool days there is no point.
In return, you get what cannot be found in August at any price: space, quiet and time.
The sun, hour by hour
At the seaside, the hour matters as much as the month. In summer, the rays are strongest between 11:00 and 16:00. In the morning, until 10:00, and in the afternoon, after 17:00, you can stay in the sun much more comfortably, although sun cream is still necessary. Skin burns even on a cloudy day, and even in the shade of an umbrella, because of the reflection from the sand and the water, and above all on breezy days, when you cannot feel the heat. The first beach day is the riskiest: start with a little.
The longest days of the year are in the second half of June, when the sun rises shortly after 5:30 and sets around 21:00. In September the light shortens noticeably and evening comes early, but it has the most beautiful colours of the year.
