The decks
Architect George Matei Cantacuzino set the building at right angles to the shore, like a ship with its bow to the sea. This way the rooms face south and east, and the curved balconies follow its line.
From the upper floors you can see the sea and Lake Belona. The white façade is easy to recognise in old postcards too: the one alongside was mailed in 1957.
How the building was designedThe cabins

In a tourist’s colour slides from 1960, the terrace above the beach is full of tables with red and green tablecloths. The hotel’s café bar brings the habit back.
Ashore
Leave the hotel, walk down the steps in front of it and you are on the sand. The hotel stays above, on the cliff, just as it appears in the postcards of the 1960s and 1970s.

1933
The building opened in August 1933 as the seaside sanatorium of the Society of Disabled War Veterans. The name comes from Bellona, the Roman goddess of war, protector of the wounded.
It has been a hotel since the spring of 1934. The full story, chapter by chapter, with the photographs and postcards of each decade, is on the page “The story of the place”.
